About Marten

Marten was born in a small town near Amsterdam in 1967. His father took him on long boat trips through the surroundings of their hometown. At every bridge and village we went through there was another story to tell about its history and the people who lived there. He was the first tour guide in Marten life. Telling stories to other people is a gift. Marten inherited this gift from his father.

In 1985 Marten moved to Amsterdam to study at the Amsterdam University and a whole new world opened up. The tales to be told about this magnificent city near the Noordzee are endless.

Globalization, capitalism and modern society started in this small fisherman’s town. Marten will tell the stories about the start of the modern world we live in today. The history of Amsterdam can be found in its city plan, architecture, food and mentality.

One option for a tour is to spend hours strolling through the old city, enjoying coffee and apple pie in the shadow of De Oude Kerk. Alternatively, you can cycle around the historic center or indulge in a Dutch food tour at the Albert Cuijp Market.

Marten is an official tour guide at the Rijksmuseum and he can walk with you through the highlights of the Dutch Golden Age. The remnants of Amsterdam’s Jewish history is everywhere in the city and another possiblity is to show you the monuments and listen to the stories of the Holocaust.

Outside of Amsterdam you can choose for a tour surrounded by the beauty of our underwater country. For centuries the Dutch have been fighting the water successfully. This fight is a big part of our country’s DNA and is petrified in dykes and windmills.
